Retro Game “Chip’s Challenge” To Get Sequel After Only 25 Years Of Waiting

Chip’s challenge, the original puzzle game developed by Chuck Sommerville for The Windows 3.1 and The Atari Lynx, is finally getting a sequel after 25 years. It will be named “Chip’s Challenge Two”, and the original game will be available for Steam users on May 28th, 2015.

Chip’s challenge is a tile-based puzzle game that was released in 1989 by Chuck Sommerville. The game centered around Chip McCallahan, a high school student who is eager to prove him self to Melinda and The Bit Buster club. you accomplish this by traversing through Melinda’s playhouse to prove yourself to the club. The game was also released on DOS, Commodore 64, Windows, and The ZX Spectrum.

The sequel will feature 200 new levels, and will give gamers more abilities and monsters to fight than ever before! Chip’s Challenge Two will also allow you to play as Chip’s girlfriend, Melinda, for the first time in the game’s history. As for why the sequel took 25 years to be released, Sommerville says that the original trademark for the game was sold to another company that asked him to pay for the publishing of the game. When he said he couldn’t afford to, the game was promptly shelved.

In a statement regarding the release of Chip’s challenge Two, Chip said, “When I couldn’t release Chip’s Challenge 2, it hit me really hard. Not only had I spent two years perfecting it, I also felt I’d let down the fans too. I generally thought the only way Chip’s Challenge 2 was ever going to see the light of day was by having my wife leak it on the Internet on my death.”

What do you think about the game being released 25 years later? Do you think present day gamers will be able to appreciate this piece of gaming history? Do you think you will play this game with your son or daughter when it’s released? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. I hope people can appreciate this game now. It was a big part of my childhood. I heard about cc2 when I was a kid and am glad I get to finally play it after 15 years of hold up. It may be from the 90’s but it is just as fun now as it was back then.
